Pioneer Days in Watonga, Oklahoma
April 30, 2005
It was cold last Friday, and Sunday was not too great either, but boy did we have a great day Saturday for Pioneer Day.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the Territorial Wagon Train and we really appreciated them being here.

The parade was great, the bed races were a lot of fun and Katie Ballew had some wonderful entertainment lined up for the afternoon. First State Bank took home the trophy for the fastest bed, while Watonga municipal Hospital took the trophy for the best decorated bed. Second in the best decorated category went to Opportunities Inc. and third went to First State Bank. Second fastest bed was the Diamond Back Prison team and the Chamber of Commerce bed powered by another team from opportunities Inc. came in third. I was a little concerned when I saw Dr. Schenk lined up to push the bed from the hospital, but I noticed he brought some medical help with him so I figured it was ok.

Ten teams signed up for the horseshoe tournament. It took two and one half-hours to play off the double elimination tournament and it was a hard fought contest. Final honors and the prize money went to the team of Biggs and Biggs with the Shoemaker and Hale team from Enid coming in second.
Cozetta Lesperance won the cow chip-throwing contest in the ladies division and in the men’s division Donnie Dunn was the winner with a throw of eighty feet. [Somehow I knew Donnie would be good at that] In the junior division Luke Wright was the winner, in fact he threw farther than most of the men, [good job Luke] Doug and Jeanie Adams, Big Jim Tanner, Ray and Eleanor Wallander, Brittany Jo, Roger and Katie Ballew and Carla Shultz all did a fantastic job of entertaining the folks in the afternoon. It was a long day, Tony Kohl finished cooking the last of the hamburgers about seven o’clock. All the folks who helped with the day were pretty tired but it was fun, and we are looking forward to next year. Donnie Dunn did a great job on his first event as promotion chairman. It takes a lot of work and organization to put an event together. Those helping Donnie on the promotion committee were his wife Louise, Tony Kohl, Rex Kraft, and Katie Ballew.” Good job guys’.
