Hoberecht Insurance
In 1892, a saloon sat on this spot along with a produce and then millenary shop next to the alley. In 1898 the saloon was closed and converted to the Bank of Watonga with a part of the building being occupied by a general store. In 1900, the building was rebuilt using Kelly brick, formed from red clay northwest of Watonga at W.R. Kelly's brick kiln. The two story building housed the bank, a retail store at the west end with upstairs offices occupied by doctors, lawyers and dentists. The bank was re chartered as National Bank and Trust. In 1920, E.T. Hoberecht bought the bank and ran it until the depression of the 1930's when the bank closed. In 1935, Watonga State Bank bought the assets and building and was housed there until 1974. Ernie Hoberecht Insurance and Blaine County Abstract leased the building and then bought it in 1983 and remain there today.

| Noble Hotel
Definitely a place to visit! A group of individuals went together and put over $300,000
into the preservation of this building. It is on the National Register of historic Places.
The building was built in 1892 and in 1893 the Watonga Republican Newspaper operated out of here.
In 1900 a man by the name of Bill's purchased the building and operated a barbershop
for a while. Later the Bill' built a two story hotel and it was known as Abe Bill's
Rooming House. It was quite a little hotel in its time. After Mr. Bill's died his widow
sold the building in 1928 to a new owner and it became the Noble Hotel. The hotel operated for
a while but as motels became popular it seemed to turn into a rooming house. Most of the rooming house tenants did
not have vehicles and they needed a way to get around. In the early 60's a taxicab business
was opened and operated from the front desk of the hotel. |
Stewart Real Estate
At the corner of Main & Noble you will find Stewart Real Estate and H & R Block. It
hasn't always been that way. In 1906 this two-story building was known as the Hooper
Drug Store. Residents of the community remember riding their bicycles up to an outside
window to order ice cream. In the early days this was a hopping place. Many people
reminisce about climbing up the stairs to a dance hall.

| Snoozer's Screen Printing and Design
Built before the turn of the century this building was purchased in 1892. In 1917 it became
a clothing store and remained a clothing store until 1970. It then became
a well-known drug store. The same person owned 104 & 106 W. Main since 1951.
It continued as a drug store until sometime in the 1980's. Later it was
leased and became Watonga Floral. The shop owner offers a wide variety of
arrangements and gifts for every occasion. The newly renovated exterior facade
has made this building a remembrance of the past. |
Temptations
While you are strolling the streets and enjoying history you may like to stop by
Temptations and see what is in store for you. In 1986 new owners purchased the building
and wanted to stay within the era of our prairie architect. They did just that. They
uncovered a ghost sign on the wall. It reads: Selling Hardware, Furniture and Undertaking
Goods--W. H. Munger. This was a real surprise. They redid the windows and the
front entrance to the store that was true to that period. After the completion they
finished the project by adding awnings for protection and appearance. This is a place you
won't want to miss as they currently sell gift items and collectibles. |

| Wright's Insurance
In 1892, James Wagner put in a dry goods and general merchandise store in this location. Overhauls and shoes were sold on the second story which accounts for the metal railings still located on the ceiling for the ladders to roll back and forth on. Coopers Restaurant was there in 1911. Garvey Brothers Clothing store opened in 1952. The story goes that when Garvey retired he hired Curry McFarland to run it for him.. Garvey would sit in the front of the store and count the packages coming out of his store in comparison with those coming out of Tyler's store next door. When the count from Tyler's became more than from his store, Garvey fired McFarland and ran the store himself. Orin and Elsie Veatch put in a drug store which then sold to Richard and Carolyn Widney who kept it a drug store until 1984. In the 1990's to now, the building has housed the Feel Good Club, Country Peddler, Barbara's, Watonga Christian Youth Center and is now the location of Wright Insurance Agency.

Country Home Antiques, 103 East Main
(Rose Building)
Mr. Rose built a two-story brick building in 1911. He owned and operated a hardware
store on the ground level. The upstairs had several interesting businesses including a
pool hall, photograph studio and dental offices. Watonga's first dentist was woman that
had her office upstairs. The Rose Building remained a hardware store until 1984. At this time the

In 1994 the building was rented for an antique and refurbishing furniture store. In 1997 the building was purchased along with the adjoining building. The owners went to work restoring the interior and exterior of the buildings ground floors. A boarded-up archway was opened to the adjoining building to extend the interior space. In 1998 completion was done on the ground floors of the buildings and the buildings were filled with antiques. The lovely historic buildings with tin ceilings and hardwood floors housed the antique store, Ice House Antiques until 2006 when the owners were ready for retirement and put the buildings up for sale. They prayed that the next owners would also have a desire to continue with an antique store in these lovely buildings. Internet shopping lead the current owners to Watonga to view these beautiful buildings in which they were desiring to purchase an old downtown building for an antique store with and upstairs to renovate as living quarters. In August 2006 these buildings were purchased by them and the transition from previous owners to current owners was made without ever closing the store. The owners welcome you to stop in and browse the antiques displayed with a touch of today’s modern décor while in the area.
