Dollar General Store
|
| In 1939, J.L. Turner founded his own retail business in Scottsville, Kentucky, with his son, Cal. In 1955 they opened the first Dollar General in Albany, Kentucky on an experimental basis (no item over $1) which was extremely successful.
Watonga Main Street Organization would like to honor the local Dollar General Store as the August ‘Business of the Month’.
Dollar General aims to provide name brands at a discounted price. The store is adding more products daily such as the controllers for the Wii and Xbox. At the same time, the current team, is un-cluttering the aisles and organizing so that the store is easier to shop.

one of the new additions in Dollar General is
the 'party section'! |
Traci Livingston, the manager for Dollar General, has been with the company for a year. She says that she went in the store one day to buy a pack of note cards and ended up being interviewed for the manager’s position. She says that she is glad she took the job.
And the employees feel the same way. They say that Traci has made the difference in the store’s shop ability; they say that she is family-oriented and fun to work for and that she doesn’t like to be called boss. She feels like they are all on one team. |
Most of
the employees grew up in Watonga and that situation makes for a friendly
atmosphere for their customers. The employees have a lot of fun together,
especially the late night stocking crew. There have been a lot of funny
events take place, usually involving the Dollar General ghost.
|
Dollar General Founder, J.L. Turner, started his business with only a 3rd grade education. He implemented the literacy cubes on the counters to raise money for literacy programs to help those not as fortunate as he was. The money collected absolutely stays in that community.
Dollar General is very beneficial to our community. The Dollar General staff invites you to come in, walk around, cool off, and check out all their new items in a clean, friendly and spacious store.
