Our Library
There being only small libraries in Blaine County, our Home
Demonstration Club members found it necessary to secure from the extension
department and state library, books needed in our work. In 1947 at the suggestion of our Home
Demonstration Agent, Maudie Thompson, a County Council Library was
started. Several books were contributed
by Miss Thompson and Miss Bonnie Goodman, a former extension worker, and a few
have been given by other individuals.
Each club was assessed $1.00 per year library fee, and a county library
committee was appointed. This practice
has continued to the present, and we now have in April 1953, 133 books. There are books on gardening, cooking,
sewing, flower arrangements, gift wrapping, home making and housekeeping, party
planning and game books; also religious education books, and many on family
life including child development and parent education. There are good books of fiction for the
relaxing hour of a tired busy homemaker; and last but not least some biographies
to both entertain and educate.
"The history of the world is the biography of great people."
The Home Demonstration Agent and her assistants check out
these books. As they are busy with
other duties it has been the aid of the committee to secure mainly, only those
books of special interest to the home maker.
The committee attempts to keep informed on the best books available and
carefully considers all requests of clubs; then purchase as many as possible of
interest to the most club members.
Usually books have been purchased from 10% to 30% discount.
By recommendation of the County Committee a library chairman
has been appointed in each club whose duty it is to promote reading and book
reviews by securing these books for her club and seeing that a list of all
library books is placed where members can see it.
Other goals are that some time be given to several club
meetings each year for the discussion of books and reading as a hobby; also
that there be at least one book review each year.
"A good book is the best of friends, the same today and
forever." --Tupper
